Bill Quatman’dan Mektup

Selçuk Halkı’na yeni Saat Kulesi hakkında mektup:

Altmış yıl önce, Ekim 1955’te, bir grup Amerikalı ve Türk, Efes Amerikan Topluluğu’nu kurdu. Bu çalışma, Selçuk’a ilk defa geldiğinde Efes’teki antik Hıristiyan kiliseleri ve arkeolojik sitelerin restorasyonuna katkıda bulunmak isteyen büyükbabam, George B. Quatman, tarafından yönetildi. Topluluk Türk yetkililerden izin talep etmiş ve Kaymakam ve Belediye Başkanı’yla 1958’de Selçuk’un antik geçmişinden kalan bu harika binaların restorasyonunu destekleyecekleri yönde karşılıklı bir taahhütname için protokole imza atmışlar.

1955’ten beri, Topluluk, St. John Bazilikası, Meryem Ana Evi, Meryem Kilisesi, Meryem’in Bülbül Dağı’ndaki güzel heykeli, Şirince’deki iki kilise gibi birçok arkeolojik projeyi finanse etti. Son yıllarda, Topluluk, Yedi Uyurlar Mağarası, St. Luke’un Mezarı ve St. Paul Mağarası’nın restorasyonunu desteklemiş bulunmakta. Dünyanın her yerinden milyonlarca turist Efes’e geliyor, sadece antik Roma kalıntılarını değil, restore edilmiş Hıristiyanlık eserlerini de görmek için. Turizm Selçuk’un en büyük sektörü olduğu için bu belediyeye de gelir sağlıyor.

Amerikan ve Türk halklarının altmış yıllık bu işbirliğinin üstüne, Efes’in sanat ve mimarisini korumak ve saygıdeğer kılmakla beraber, Topluluk Selçuk halkına bir hediye vermek istedi. Üç yıl önce, Topluluk, Selçuk eski Belediye Başkanı Vefa Ülgür’le 60. Yıldönümünü hatırlamak adına uygun bir bağışta bulunmak için iletişime geçti. Bir sanat çalışmasının, kamu alanında duracak bir heykelin yeterince uygun ve görünür olduğuna karar verildi. Topluluk bunun üstüne Amerikalı sanatçılar David ve Robert Lepo’yu bu sanat çalışmasını tasarlamaları için görevlendirdi. Lepo kardeşler sanat çalışması konseptini pratik bir amaç için kullanma fikriyle geldiler, bu fikir ise heykelin bir saat taşıması ki böylece insanları sadece sanata bakmak için değil saatin kaç olduğunu öğrenmeleri için de çekecekti.

Topluluk bu çalışmanın boyutunun büyük olmasını istedi. Daire ve kare şeklinde olan bir çok tasarımdan sonra, üçgende karar kılındı, bir piramidin daha çekici olacağı düşünüldü. Sonuçta Lepo kardeşler, kuleyi 5 köşeli şekilde yapmaya karar verdiler. Çünkü 5 yolun kesiştiği bir yere konulması planlanıyordu; bu daha ilginç ve yapısal olarak daha sabit olacaktı. Bu sanat eserinin adını, zamanla Efes ve Selçuk’un tarihindeki kesitleri bağdaştırmak adına, “Kesişen Zaman” koydular. Bildiğiniz gibi İngilizce’de de bu tamlamanın karşılığına benzer olan “across time” ve “to cross time” kalıpları kullanılıyor.

Bu yapı farklı anlamlara tekabül eden değişik yapısal maddeler ve parçalar taşıyor. Sanatçı David Lepo şöyle açıklıyor:

“Bütünsel olarak bakıldığında bireysel amaç, özgürlük ve umut mesajları taşıyor. Heykelin temelinden en üstüne: 1. Granitten yapılmış kaidesi Doğa’dan geleni temsil eder. 2. Fotoğrafsal bileşimi, Selçuk Belediyesi’nin tarihine özgü görüntüler içerir. Bu bileşim birbirine bağlı medeniyetlerin ebediyetini ortaya koyar. 3. Ana yapıyı saran siyah granit şerit uyumlu bir toplumun olumlu temelini sembolize eder. 4. Şeffaf şerit kısmı ruhani olanı temsil eder. 5. İşlevsel saat ise hayatın her anının önemini sembolize ediyor.”

Saat kulesinin bu kış gerçekleşen inşaası Lepo kardeşler ve Selçuk Belediyesi’nin ortak bir çabasının ürünüdür. Gördük ki birçok insan inşaatı merakla ve ne anlama geldiğini sorgulayarak izledi. Efes Amerikan Topluluğu’nun umudu bu hediyenin dünyanın değişik yerlerindeki farklı dinlerden ve ülkelerden gelen insanların işbirliğini temsil edecek olmasıdır. Burada Selçuk’ta, bu farklılıkları bir kenara koyup sadece 60 yıl değil, nesillerce beraber çalıştık. Biz Belediye Başkanı Dr. Dahi Zeynel BAKICI ve Kaymakam Sn. A letter to the people of Selçuk about the new Clock Tower:

Sixty years ago, in October 1955, a group of American and Turkish men founded The American Society of Ephesus (the Society). This effort was led by my grandfather, George B. Quatman, who first visited Selçuk that year and wanted to do something to help with the restoration of ancient Christian churches and other archaeological sites in Ephesus. The Society sought permission from Turkish authorities and signed a Protocol with the Kaymakam and Mayor in 1958 with a mutual pledge to assist in the restoration of these wonderful buildings that are part of Selçuk’s ancient past.

Since 1955, the Society has financed numerous archaeological projects such as St. John’s Basilica, Meryem Ana Evi, the Church of Mary in Ephesus, the beautiful statue of Mary on Bulbul Dagh; and two churches in Sirince. In more recent years, the Society has assisted with studies to restore the Cave of the Seven Sleepers, with St. Luke’s Tomb and the Cave of St. Paul. Millions of tourists from around the world come to Ephesus, not only to see the ancient Roman ruins, but the restored Christian sites as well. This brings revenue to the municipality, since tourism is the largest industry in Selçuk.

In recognition of sixty years of cooperation between American and Turkish people, working to preserve and respect the art and architecture of Ephesus, the Society wanted to give a gift to the people of Selçuk. Three years ago, the Society contacted former Selçuk Mayor Vefa Ulgur about making an appropriate donatoin to mark this 60th anniversary. It was decided that a work of art, a sculpture in a public location, would be proper and most visible. The Society then hired American artists David and Robert Lepo to design the work of art. The Lepo brothers came up with the concept to use the art work for a practical purpose also, to hold a large clock, which will draw people to look at the art work not only as “art” but to find out the time of day.

The Society wanted the art work to be large in scale. After many designs that were square or round, it was decided that a triangle shape, like a pyramid would be more attractive. The Lepo brothers decided to make the tower a 5-sided shape, which would be more interesting and be structurally more stable. They named the art work “Cross Time,” to connect with the clock (time) and the passage of many centuries of history of Ephesus and Selçuk. In English you would say “across time,” or “to cross time.”

This sculpture is comprised of sculptural elements and parts with different meanings. Artist David Lepo explains that, “In totality, this conveys a message of individual purpose, freedom, and hope for the future.” From the base of the sculpture upwards you will find: 1. The seating stones are naturally cut granite and symbolize the Earth, or that which comes from Nature. 2. The photographic composition consists of images specific to the history of the Selcuk Municipality, from Roman times to present day. The composition of images suggests a timelessness, connecting many civilizations, from Pagan, to Christian, to Islamic – the three major periods of Ephesus. 3. The black granite ribbon which wraps the main structure symbolizes the positive core foundations of a harmonious society. 4. The transparent ribbon element symbolizes the etheral. 5. The functional clocks symbolize the importance of life’s every moment.

The construction of the clock tower this winter was a collaborative effort of the Lepo brothers and the municipality of Selçuk. We understand that many people have watched the construction with curiosity, wondering what this tower is meant to represent. It is the hope of the American Society of Ephesus that this gift will represent a symbol of cooperation between people from different parts of the world, from different religions and countries. That here in Selçuk, we can set aside those differences to work together, not just for sixty years, but for many generations. We thank the Mayor, Dr. Dahi Zeynel BAKICI, and the Kaymakam, Sn. Ayhan BOYACI, for their cooperation and also the people of Selçuk, and we hope that you and your children, and your grandchildren will enjoy the clock tower and art work as our gift. Thank you.
